Innovation in process-oriented orebody characterization

Too often, geologists tend to focus only on features (mineral assemblages, fractures,…) which are essential as a guide for exploration. They also tend to collect samples with a view to estimating the grade/tonnage curves, but they often disregard the properties that will have an impact on downstream processing and might jeopardize the whole economy of an extractive operation. This course will focus on the most recent technological innovations which contribute to a better understanding of a mineral resource from in situ and online measurements down to microanalytical techniques for automated mineralogy. It will introduce principles of geometallurgy and show how process-oriented ore characterization allows to predict process performance and its environmental impact. Participants will be given a unique opportunity to interact with some of the leading specialists and innovators in the field.

Day 1. Sensing and modelling the ore deposit: Digital perspectives in the mining industry | Introduction to process-oriented orebody characterization | Principles of geological imaging and online vision | Automated analytical core logging system…

Day 2. Tracking the fine particles and minerals: Sample preparation for quantitative mineralogy | SEM-based automated mineralogy | MicroXRF for mineralogical mapping | MicroLIBS for elemental mapping | Reconciliation of mineralogical data.

DAY 3. Process simulations and lifecycle assessment: Minerals and process simulation | Introduction to LCA for mineral processing operations | Case study of LCA in mineral processing.
